I like the way the horns fit into some of these new songs (What Are You Willing To Lose and Maggie), but after hearing Darken My Door and Goodbye Again live without them, I'd have to say I kind of wish those two were recorded without horns. Thoughts?

Maybe....I have to say I like it both ways. It's almost like two different songs.

Goodbye Again came out really, really good with the Horns.  I'm so glad they did it.

I'm a high school band director, so I obviously hear horns every day.  (not that makes me an expert or anything)  For the most part I think they fit pretty well with the tunes, but I just think there is just a little too much of them at times.  I think this might be why I can't get into "Can't Feel A Thing" yet....I just don't think that tune needs the horns.  I think it just makes a slower tune like that feel like there's a little too much going on.  This is, of course, just my opinion.

On the other hand, I think they're great on a tune like "Sounds of the City."  That tune wouldn't be the same without the bari sax wailing on that guitar/bass line.

I actually really like the horns on all of them but  Willing to Lose.  It's not that they're bad on that one, they just surprise me during the verses and seem out of place.  I would've liked it better if they just kept it to the chorus and bridge.

That's pretty much how I feel.  After hearing the live version, I hoped Can't Feel a Thing would be arranged more like Hold Me Close.

There are times I think the horns are great (Sounds of the City, Maggie) and times I could have done without them (Can't Feel a Thing, What Are You Willing), but overall I like the record a lot and I recognize that a band that doesn't change can't grow.

My biggest regret is that on most songs Todd gets buried in the mix so you can barely tell he's there.  I like what he was doing live with What Are You Wiling to Lose and Johnny Davis a lot.  Of course, your mileage may vary.

I really dig the horns. reminds me of Mudhoney's Under A Billion Suns, which was also a successful, natural integration of them.

I really like the horns on a lot of the songs, and the more I listen the more they grow on me.  I'm also stoked to see them branching out and growing more, they can only play "My Best Girl" so many times before they're gonna wanna drive their van off something high or into something hard.  I wouldn't mind seeing an alternate release like they did on That Much Further West because some of these songs sound amazing stripped down(Darken My Door for instance) but I'm sure they'll do enough shows and play enough versions that they'll get out eventually.  I also think a little more Todd would be nice, he does get kinda overshadowed.  I'm pretty much hooked on that sound since Last Pale Light In the West.
