Is it just me, or was their showcase performance of No Roses No More on the Bright Stars On Lonely Nights DVD... horrendous? Uncharacteristically horrendous.

I know they said they weren't their own amps, but were there equipment malfunctions otherwise? I know he slams his pedals and all that... but aside from that even, Ben just looks so out of it.

And above all, were they really perhaps not looking to impress anyone at that show? No Roses No More was an odd choice. I like the song and all, but it doesn't really represent them better than much of the rest of their catalog. It's very slow, and Roy can't really work his magic in it.

Anyway, just re-watched it tonight, and that performance has always bothered me. Wondered what you all thought.

That song has grown on me a lot.  I love the breakdown at the end.  But you're right, its not the type of song you'd typically play at a showcase type of event.  That said, I think they do a pretty good job on Bright Stars, especially at the end of it.

i disagree. i like it better than the album version. and as a song on their first album, it's smokin.

I concur

I think that song in particular, Brians guitar work, Roy's precision, Stubbs on the standup, and the lyrics..goodlord it gives me chills and always has. Bright Stars is all about the true blue heart of this band...and I think that song is a fantastic showcase of those boys at that moment time

I'd second that emotion, and to your point about it being a showcase of that time, one of my favorite parts of the whole documentary is Ben's response as to why they chose that song to play..."Because it rocks."

It does look to me like Ben and Brian are trying to figure something out on stage to get on the same page.  Something like mouthing a cord and then fingering it to show Brian, if I remember right.

However, I think the angry faces, and banging on the gear makes that performance rock.  It is rock n' roll.
