Hey folks. Just got back from SXSW last week and went straight into Ardent Studios. As far as South by Southwest goes, we had a blast. Five shows in three days and we didn’t mess any of them up too bad. It’s always crazy down there but with the help of our tour manager Will we made it through just fine. We have to thank all the folks that came out to see us and the venues for having us. Got to see my little brothers and some old friends… yup, good time all around. Now. Recording. This is our first record for Univeral Republic and we’re at Ardent studios in midtown Memphis. This is actually only the second time we’ve done a full band record in Memphis (That Much Further West was the only other one). I think we made a good choice. We wanted to take our favorite pieces of Memphis music history and combine it with the drunken rock&roll we usually play and see what we came up with. This is gonna be a soulful one folks. We’ve got a lot of the basic tracking down and now we’re getting into the really fun stuff, like Rick Steff’s keyboard parts and horns and backup singers. Yup. Backup singers. Don’t worry. We’re working with a producer named Ted Hutt and he’s got a really good idea of how to get this record where it needs to go. We’re using a bunch of great Memphis musicians and we’re in a studio that has been at the center of a lot of great Memphis recordings… we’re in good hands. Can’t wait for ya’ll to hear this stuff. Everybody in the band is really excited. So hopefully we’ll get some pictures up soon from the recording session. Brian’s working on some guitar parts right now. Time for me to head back over there and sing a few. Take care out there ya’ll. -Ben

Hope ya’ll are doing well out there. It’s been a good week for us Lucero folks. We have to thank all the kids that came out to Luke’s benefit show at the Rev Room in Little Rock. It went great. Thanks for helping us pull that off. The two days before that show we were in the studio at Young Ave Sound working on more demos for the upcoming Lucero album. It’s been a while since we released Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers, but the demos are coming along real well and hopefully it’ll all be worth the wait in the end. In the meantime there is always The Last Pale Light in the West to tide you over. Speaking of which, Rick Steff and I actually went in and did an interview for the NPR show “Day to Day” and played some songs from that album live. The show aired on Friday January 16th but if you missed it you can go to the NPR website and listen to it. Another thing that is pretty cool is the trailer for $5 Cover that is up and running at www.fivedollarcover.com. We were real lucky to be a part of that project. Hopefully we can see more of it soon. I guess that covers it for now. Thanks as always for checking in. I know Roy’s got some stuff up his sleeve he’s working on so check back soon, maybe we’ll have some more news for ya.
Happy New Years everybody. Haven’t posted a news item myself in a little while and so I figured I’d type a short end of the year piece. Main reason I’m posting something is to let you know we’re playing a benefit show for our friend Luke Hunsicker. Luke, as many of you know, is the bassist for one of our favorite bands the American Princes. He just underwent brain surgery to remove a benign tumor. The surgery went as well as it could and hopefully Luke will be back to 100% real soon. Of course he is a musician and has no health insurance. So if you can come out to the Rev Room in Little Rock on January 9th, all the money we raise is going to help with his bills. If you want to make a donation directly you can do so online at the American Princes website: www.americanprinces.com. We booked this show last minute due to the circumstances, so tell everyone you know and come out if you can.
SO. JANUARY 9TH 8PM AT THE REV ROOM in LITTLE ROCK, LUCERO with BIG BOOTS and WHALE FIRE
Now. We’ve had a very busy year and I’ve got a lot of people to thank for helping us make it through. No a lot of time for that right now cause I gotta get downtown to soundcheck for the show with the Allstars tonight… but thank you everyone that helped with all the tours this year, the Last Pale Light in the West album, the demo process for the new Lucero record, the Universal deal, the Revival shows, the Five Dollar Cover filming and the release of Shotgun Stories. I think with all the work in 2008 behind us we’re in a great spot to make 2009 an exciting year for the band. So thanks again to everyone involved and thanks to you for checking in to the website every now and then. See you soon.
